Lucy barks, sleeping
Runs dreaming beside our horse
Surf sprays us all

—Amanda Burton

Author notes: Lucy is a large-bodied, large-hearted, large-brained dog...part mastiff, part labrador. She dreams more than any animal I know, barking loudly enough in her sleep that I'm amazed it doesn't wake her. She cries and whimpers sometimes,
other times barking joyously and proudly. Her legs work as through she's galloping somewhere. When I adopted her from the pound in 1993 life had not been good and she had horrible nightmares every night. It took about six months for them to fade, and for her confidence to return.

I took her walking in the woods on a private estate and she saw what I'm sure must have been her first horse. She stopped in her tracks and looked at me questioningly. Then she sat down, and watched it for some time. I waited until she was ready to go on.

I imagine her dreams might include running beside "our" horse, galloping through the surf which she loves.

a very interesting piece, amanda; it gave rise to my spying on the brownie fudge, on the platter, in front of me; finding myself in a feeding frenzy, i will continue at a later time.

"how quickly time passes", with that being said, i'll try to continue.

    "Lucy barks, sleeping
    Runs dreaming beside our horse
    Surf sprays us all"

guessing; the only thing i can do, is jump right in.

a few moments, amanda, however, i like your perception.

a bit much is being said, in such a tiny space; possibly (not) fully explaining, to the degree you have, would enhance the piece.

    the horse...
    lucy, barks and runs
    while sleeping

an elimination of the third line, "Surf sprays us all", seems essential.

Found this while browsing the archives; what a precious story about Lucy and her first horse! She sounds like a darling dog and very lucky to have found her 'forever' home.
