No one knows the music of a boiler better than the furnace man, and I find good humor in imagining that he is carefully tuning the boiler to his own soft grumble. Bravo, Maestro Winke.
What a great senryu. So many plays here. We have “grumble” played against “tunes” and the “grumble” of the furnace. And the feeling that this man has worked so many years with furnaces, he’s become one. Just wonderful and original.

darkening skies –
she makes ready to leave him
storm approaches
empty church
the whisper
of my prayers
fine tuning
the choir’s upright piano
the dissonance
of church gossip
saying goodbye
out in the rain —
waning moon, sheds a tear
