I live with my wife Shirlee on a cattle ranch near the little ski town of Red Lodge, Montana, and have been loving and writing haiku for several years now. I draw my inspiration from the images of the high-plains, mountains, weather, wildlife, livestock, ranch work and outdoor recreation which surround me daily.

This was a haiku I really liked, both for its originality and its heart. The tone is beautifully restrained and so the more powerful for that.
a good haiku!
this “potato salad” brings me back to my own childhood, my “time with dad”
Mike, this one brings a lump to my throat…
so tender, so memorable.

Thank you all so much for your thoughtful responses and encouragement.
I like your haiku very much, Mike. Gravesites are so peaceful and quiet…what better place to remember out parents and picnic a little too.

That’s really beautiful. I’ve been thinking lately of my own father, who passed 18 years ago.
