Lovely imagery of sight and sound.
(I guess I'm nitpicking, but I think that, meteorologically, the thunder comes before the lightning. I happened to encounter that fact on TV a few days ago, so it's still on my mind!! It's still a lovely haiku.)
Really a great poem, Angie! It's quite visual, very perceptive, and original. Thanks.
For the record, lightning and thunder happen at the same time but lightning is seen before thunder is heard … always! The interval between the two is mainly a function of distance of the storm from the observer. Google "thunder before lightning?"
thank you everyone for your kind comments — glad you like it!
@southwest side soul — I remember my grandma counting between the lightning and thunder when I was a kid, trying to guess how many miles away the storm was. that was before doppler radar on tv, of course!
You got me thinking, as I thought the same. Depends possibly where the witness is? I watched lightning come down two or three times about ten feet away in a neighbour's garden. I'm a sucker for this weather.
I read this:
"Thunder and lightning occur at roughly the same time, although you see the flash of lightning before you hear the thunder. This is because light travels much faster than sound." http://windows2universe.org/earth/Atmosphere/tsto…
"Thunder and Lightning
This is thunder. If you are near the stroke of lightning you'll hear thunder as one sharp crack. " http://www.wxdude.com/page5.html
