Charles Trumbull is an editor for Encyclopaedia Britannica and lives in Evanston, Illinois. He has been writing haiku since 1991. He was editor (1996-2002) of the Haiku Society of America Newsletter, president of the HSA in 2004 and 2005, and an organizer of the Haiku North America 1999 conference. He is currently editor of Modern Haiku and proprietor of Deep North Press, a publisher of haiku books.

I guess without this inclination to mentally fill in the blanks we’d all be paralysed with uncertainty! I really like this haiku Charles, it’s wonderfully vivid.

you are quite right, this piece is rather vague.
in reading it, i was feeling there was more to come, but surely not for it to be left to my imagery.
it lacks conciseness. there is a hint of juxtapose, as i began wondering what was on the other side, a rather suspenseful moment at best.
a little mystery in a haiku is acceptable, however not to the point of leaving the reader completely at a lost, nor the mystery being preponderate nor predominate of all else.
