This is probably my favorite hiaku of the year so far. So perfect. Brillliant, even. I will share this with my poetry writing classes as an example of what modern haiku can do. Great work Bret Woolridge!
thanks all! its one of my few from the “darkside”.
mike a. you are obviously cultured! ;)you (the rest of you too) and your students are welcome to write with me in the haiku forum at shadowpoetry.com where i co-moderate.
great replies everybody! a privelige to be read by my peers!
john, your child driven animal shadows are absolutely primitive! (i mean that in the best possible sense)

Wow, that is an evocative poem. Thanks for sharing that one. What an image..
Troy
first anniversary…
white roses planted
in moonlight
after the funeral . . .
eyeglasses
in a straw basket
granite stones
even in the sunlight
glimmer cold
widow in black
reflecting
the lonely abyss
today’s ‘ku…too cool…
chilly, chillier
of course, there’s the chilliest
be glad you’re alive
great ku, Mixx:)
in the dust
a new widow drops
her veil
well, thank-you, kate…
white roses, in the moonlight…beautiful imagery, enjoyed that very much as well.
Mixx
fog
snaking through heavy laden blackberry bushes —
basket in hand
blackout
candlelight
children drive animals on the walls
great SENRYU.
graveside service
the sting
of a december wind
thanks all! its one of my few from the “darkside”.

bret,
you’ve reduced the traditional country
ballad “long black veil” down to it’s
essence in a marvelous way! great short poem
levon machenry
first light…
the confederate cemetery
filled with songbirds
bret,
haiku or senryu no quibbling about
the quality of the piece.
cheers,
ed
dust
the future floats through a gap
in the living room drapes
postal funeral
the grave smaller than the coffin
Suddenly, a splash
about the municipal graveyard:
snowy dove on the wing
This poem showed me more what haiku is about than all the rest of the “explanations” I’ve read. It was real “eureka” for me. Thanks Bret !
Memorial Day…
the shadow of old glory
snakes across his headstone
in protest of bush’s lie based war
and in honor of my brothers who
fell in johnson and nixon’s
war of lies
black on black
with winter’s harvest–
further i go into the night
