I love this beautiful image of resting, quietly listening for the woodsmoke.
What about a family living near a wildfire, and the dog always on alert for it getting too close… Always ready to save them, even when asleep. That’s how I heard this…

Thank you for commenting Nichael. I think dogs can be alert even when they're asleep! x
Really niceāopen-hearted and evocative haiku
Thank you for taking the time to comment Bob. It's definitely a 'fireside' poem – warm and cosy. x
This is so Thomas Hardy.
Love the smell and the sense of peace, with the dog alert to its flock.
Thank you, Julie.
Thank you so much Ingrid. I'm a dog lover and a dog owner – it's that ability to stay alert while resting that intrigues me. x
