gone to slaughter

all the way back to childhood cabbage whites
white moon at dawn the substation’s hum
hint of woodsmoke
the collie sleeps
with one ear cocked
surface ripples
the songs my mother
knew by heart
crepuscular light
the first puff of pine smoke
enters the hive
harvest moon
laughter bubbles
from the neighbor’s hot tub
