out of the thinning fog and back again pelicans at Big Sur
pierced by the radio tower on Signal Hill the back-to-school moon
lingering heat the cricket pauses as my shadow passes
from across the crowded dining table her laughter
Labor Day weekend
the faded Hula-Hoop
in the weeds
Sunday afternoon . . .
I help my neighbor
take her top down
in full bloom…
the forgotten
onion
first night of summer …
neither the mockingbird
nor I can sleep
watering …
ants with white eggs
climb higher
a cold breeze
I ignore the new weeds
for another day
insomnia…
the traffic signal changes
for nobody
evening commute
a dozen crows
on the horizon
the large turkey carved
with neat precision …
retired coroner
a bald man
ahead of me
I wonder
about each scar
two sleeping kids —
before the grunion run
a family leaves
the honeydew —
watching TV I finish
the other half
losing its grip …
the red ladybug
on the blue wall
lantana bushes —
this side of the chainlink
they grow wild
through the chainlink —
neighbors debating
the chance of rain
